We're moving!
Venus Envy gets bigger and better at 1598 Barrington Street (at Sackville). We're going to have more books, more toys, more hemp and health products, and generally just more fun. May 3 is our first day at the new store, and Grand Opening festivities are scheduled for Saturday May 8. In the meantime, we're having a moving sale during the last 2 weeks of April with lots of great books, toys, and gifts at 30% off.Our online catalogue will soon have a new address as well -- look for it at www.venusenvy.ns.ca in the very near future. (Meanwhile, you can still browse and order from our current address.) [NOTE: we are no longer at the .ns. address. Our web page is at www.venusenvy.ca]
Our much-expanded selection of books will include new sections like Business, Home Life (cooking, building, repairs, cars, bikes, pets), and Environmental Issues, just to name a few. We'll be carrying a full line of hemp health and beauty products such as soaps, insect repellent, sports rub, lip balm, moisturizer, and massage oils. There will also be a line of really cool PVC clothes available: shirts, skirts, leggings, and tank dresses in silver, bronze, and of course black. We even have a fitting room in the new place; there'll be no more squeezing past the boxes into our old bathroom to try stuff on.
Mothers Day
Mothers day at Venus Envy -- get your mom something she can really use! Okay, so not all moms will feel comfortable getting a Pocket Rocket from their little girl, but a gift certificate lets her pick out her own toy. There are also plenty of great books your mom might enjoy at the store. How about Red Hot Mommas: Coming into Our Own at 50 ($19.95). or Susan Weed's Menopausal Years the Wise Woman Way ($14.95)? Stories to Hide From Your Mother ($14.95) is an excellent collection of short stories with a great title, but it's much less risqu‚ than it sounds.
The Artist
Our featured artist this month is local gal Taunya Gaum. Taunya attends NSCAD full time and is exhibiting her portraits until the end of May. Venus Envy is searching for new artists to display their work in our new location. Come by with some photos of your work and get your stuff shown.Come Again!
Some things change, but some stay the same: we are continuing our Come Again card offer. This "frequent-buyer" card entitles you to a $10 gift certificate after you spend $250 at the store. Your Come Again card is kept on file for you at Venus Envy, so you don't have to remember to bring it with you; just remind us to add your purchase to your card and you're on your way!Old Space -- New Store!
Earth Paint and Fire, the paint your own pottery place, is taking over our old space at 5365 Inglis Street on May 3. They offer an exciting range of funky and functional shapes to choose from, all priced between $5 and $40. Bring mom in for a relaxing and creative Mothers day gift and receive 15% off everything she paints. Don't miss the grand opening on Saturday May 22.Book Reviews

Alias Olympia
by Eunice Lipton Cornell University Press $17.95 |
Eunice Lipton weaves a tale that combines biography and art history with her own story of writing this book. Lipton, an art history professor when the book begins, goes to Paris in search of Victorine Meurent, the woman who posed for Manet's well-known painting Olympia. Meurent, it turns out, was a painter herself -- and a musician, a traveller, a working-class socialist, a member of the Society of French Artists, and a lesbian all her life. In short, she was a real person, not just an idealization upon a canvas, which is how traditional art history tells it. This book is Meurant's story, but Lipton's as well -- the story of her childhood, youth, and her eventual decision to quit her job as a professor to be a writer. As these two women's lives weave ever closer together, this slim volume emerges as beautiful example of feminist history. Lipton recovers a fascinating and talented woman from a largely male past. She pulls Victorine out of that painting and slowly begins to learn something real about her life. Don't be put off if you have no art history background; Alias Olympia reads like a novel, and a good one at that.
