The Venus Envy Bursary Fund
What is it?
Created in winter 2000 as a way to give something back to the community that supports Venus Envy, the Bursary Fund aims to support women in need who wish to further their education. We raise money through dances, concerts and other local events, sales of pins at the store, and through private donations. In the fall of 2000 we awarded bursaries totaling $2100 to three women. The Venus Envy Bursary Society is currently registered as a charitable society (which means that we donate all the money we raise), but unfortunately we are not yet able to issue receipts for taxation purposes.
How do I apply?
The Venus Envy Bursary fund will be made available to any woman who has been accepted into any program in Nova Scotia which issues a degree, certificate or diploma . The applications are available online, as well as at the store. You can also pick up a form at women's centres, universities and community colleges, and social services agencies around Nova Scotia. The application contains questions about the applicant's financial need, experience, and proposed program of study. The successful applicants will be chosen by a selection committee of 5-7 women who will consider primarily the applicant's need, with secondary consideration given to her commitment to the women's community, and to her perceived ability to complete the year.
Your application consists of a statement about you, your program, and your needs. We provide a checklist that should accompany your application, and will assure you that your application is complete. Only complete applications will be considered for these awards.
How can I help?
Donations are most welcome! We would like to raise enough money to offer $1000 each to two women in September 2001, and to give bursaries to a greater number of women each year. The more money we can raise, the more women will benefit from the fund. Starting March 2001, Venus Envy will also donate 10% of sales on the first Monday of every month. So come in to the store, buy a pin, make a donation, or sponsor an event in support of the fund! We welcome any and all suggestions from the women's community in general. Please feel free to contact Shelley Taylor at or 422-0004 with your ideas.
