The Handyman
(dildo in black acrylic, $49.95)
A friend and I were talking toys once and she
mentioned that she had the Handyman. "So what did you name it?" I half-jokingly
asked. "Name?" she said, surprised. "No name. I just call it 'Mmmmm.'" Enough of
a recommendation for me. What had put me off the toy up till then became the
best feature afterwards: its hardness. It's made out of acrylic, which is
non-porous and thus easy to clean, but it feels like marble, which at first
seems a little cold to be sexy. But once you stop thinking "cold" and start
thinking "slippery" the toy gets better and better. First, it looks like art,
with its sheen and nice lines. Second, it's got a handle (hence the name), so
you don't have to worry about whether you can get a good grip on it or not. It
does mean you can't use it in a harness, but for those times you're not in the
strap-on mood, this is much easier. Lastly, and most importantly, the gentle
curve combined with the hardness of the acrylic make this one of the best damn
g-spot toys I've tried. Mmmmmm, indeed.
Exhibitionism for the Shy: Show Off,
Dress Up and Talk Hot
(San Francisco: Down There Press, 1995. 241 p.
$19.95)
Okay, so off the top, I must admit that this isn't
going to be an unbiased review. I love Carol Queen's writing. I'd read the phone
book cover to cover if I knew she'd written it. This started a few years ago,
when I picked up her book about sex (Real Live Nude Girl) and was
completely hooked. Not only did her perspective on sexuality and sex work have a
huge impact on my views, but the writing was funny and articulate and silly and serious all at the same time. Reading that book
was like sitting down and having one of those blind dates with someone who
becomes a close friend in a few hours.
So it was with no little trepidation that I picked
up Exhibitionism for the Shy. What if I didn't like our second date as
much as the first? What if that first connection was just a fluke and I was
about to be disappointed? I decided that there was no gain without risk, so I
pushed my fears aside, opened the book, and was happy to have done
it.
The philosophy behind this book is that "everyone
deserves and can find pleasure and fun in their erotic lives" (4), but that some
people hold themselves back because of shyness. This feeling can be born of poor
self-esteem, but in her introduction Queen argues that just as often, it
comes from old patterns of silence, a big
life-change, or simply the fact that we're taught that it's wrong to enjoy your
sexual self. The rest of the book starts with her personal story of opening up
to exhibitionism, then moves on with chapters that define exhibitionism and
voyeurism, and then how to show off for yourself
as well as with a partner, how to play with different roles, and how to meet
like-minded people. Along with tips (my favourite being to repeat words you're
not comfortable with while doing household chores --- imagine saying
"fuckfuckfuckfuckfuckfuck" nonchalantly while doing the dishes), she provides
stories from well-known exhibitionists. The book finishes off with three appendices: one is a list of roles that people
commonly play out, one for emotion words, and another for dirty words.
With her down-to-earth tone, she just makes it
seem so *possible*. By the end of the book, you're wondering why on earth it's
so much easier to keep quiet than to just say it, whatever "it" is for you.
