Cry Baby Butch by Judith Frank
Judith Frank has a way with words. Not to mention characters and plot. Crybaby Butch is actually a story of two butches. Anna, a "soft-cheeked Kevin Costner butch" is a literacy teacher. Chris, the "working-class he-she with a D-A," is a student learning how to read in Anna's class. They meet, they clash, they come to a truce, they clash, they make some sort of peace. Loves are lost, loves are gained. It is a well-paced story that deals well with the mighty triumvirate of gender, sexuality and class. That Frank manages to do this without becoming overtly pedantic or preachy, that she manages to do this while building believable and nuanced characters is a testament to her aforementioned skill with the English language. Her characters aren't "types" of lesbians – Frank has written past the point where characters have to do the work of representing "Lesbian." And alongside that, she also manages to work in some butch-femme history fairly seamlessly, drawing heavily on Stone Butch Blues for the middle part of the novel.
I loved reading a book about lesbians and lesbian community by someone who obviously has a personal stake in what's said. But even more, I loved reading a book about lesbians that was good simply because it was good.
I read Crybaby Butch much too late into the night because the characters and story were interesting, thoughtful, surprising and provocative.

Writing for performance with Kimberly Dark
Participants will learn about various forms of writing for performance, including the hugely popular genre of slam poetry. The class will provide the experience of writing and possibly performing, so we'll focus on various elements of writing to be read (solo work).Bring brief performance pieces with you if you have them. And fear not, if you don't! We will do "writing practice" on various themes that will yield material to work on later.
Participants will learn about the elements of performance story-telling (primarily rhythm, movement, repetition and story-progression). Through fun activities and a supportive setting, even those who have never read their writing aloud will have a positive experience!

Halifax Comedy Fest Comedy OUT Loud featuring gay and lesbian stand-up comedians who will get the audience roaring in the aisles. Comedy OUT Loud is hosted by Elvira Kurt, of famed Tallulah's Cabaret in Toronto and the Comedy Network's "Adventures in Comedy" and "Popcultured."

The University of Ottawa's Couple Research Lab is looking for participants for their online study on same-sex couple relationships! This study aims to better understand personal and relationship factors that contribute to well being and distress in same-sex couples.
To be eligible, you must be 18 years old or more, have a good knowledge of English and be in a same-sex couple relationship for at least 12 months. In order to thank you for your participation, you will be entered in a draw for gift certificates to a music store.
