Workshops
Please see our workshops page for details about costs and registration. Workshops are $20 per person unless otherwise noted.
| October 15, 2005 @ 8:30pm For everyone | Hands-On Play |
| It's all in the wrist... and hands, and hips, and feet! The most accessible, easiest to use, and least expensive SM toy you'll ever play with is your own body. Come and discover ways to use your hands, arms, legs, torso, feet, mouth and other body parts to create sensual SM scenes that can range from gentle to challenging. We'll cover slapping, tickling, scratching, weight exchange, biting and more! We'll also look at ways to better tune into your partner during your scenes. This is an interactive workshop; you'll be encouraged to ask questions, share your experiences and contribute your ideas. $20 per person Andrea Zanin, a Montreal native, is an alternative sexuality activist and educator. She has led numerous workshops and talks about bisexuality, BDSM and various other sexuality-related topics, and has appeared on television and spoken on the radio. She writes on queer, poly and kinky sexuality and politics for a variety of publications, including the Toronto-based bi women's zine The Fence, a monthly column on alternative sexualities for www.attitudes.cc and in the recently published anthology "Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuality from Around the World." 2 hours |
| October 15, 2005 @ 6:30pm For everyone | Bisexuality: What It Is, What It Isn't, What It Might Be! |
| This is an interactive workshop for bisexuals, people curious about bisexuality (their own or others'), and people who aren't sure how they feel about the whole bisexual thing. What is a bisexual? How do bisexuals manage their relationships? How does the world respond to bisexuals? What kind of concerns might a bi person need to deal with, and what kind of joys can bisexuality bring with it? How can you be supportive of a friend or lover who might be bisexual? What about people who call themselves "queer," "omnisexual" and "pansexual"? We'll talk about all of this and more in an atmosphere of respect and openness. $10 per person Andrea Zanin, a Montreal native, is an alternative sexuality activist and educator. She has led numerous workshops and talks about bisexuality, BDSM and various other sexuality-related topics, and has appeared on television and spoken on the radio. She writes on queer, poly and kinky sexuality and politics for a variety of publications, including the Toronto-based bi women's zine The Fence, a monthly column on alternative sexualities for www.attitudes.cc and in the recently published anthology "Getting Bi: Voices of Bisexuality from Around the World." 1 hour |

| November 19, 2005 @ 6:30pm For everyone | Blood Play with Patrick Califia |
| When the skin is broken, whatever is inside the person comes out. It is also a poignant reminder of our vulnerability to the intrusion of an outside influence, and a symbol of the eroticism of penetration. Patrick Califia, a sadist of nearly 30 years' experience, will lecture about the significance of temporary and permanent piercing and the art of adornment with scarification. We'll explore the power of the vampire archetype. There will be a demonstration of a piercing scene and also a step-by-step procedure culminating with a piece of art being transferred by a scalpel onto a model's skin. Open to all but we ask that only people with some BDSM experience attend. $25 per person ($15 sliding scale) 2 hours |
| November 22, 2005 @ 6:30pm For everyone | Going Down: A Guide to Cunnilingus |
| This workshop will cover anatomy, technique, communication skills and tricks to please your lady with your lips. And tongue, and teeth, and ... 1.5 hours |
| March 25, 2006 @ 6:30pm For everyone | Advanced Tantra-Yoga |
| Tantra has been commercialized as "spiritual sex" but in its deepest expression, it's about opening our hearts, tapping into our creativity, and using our vital energy responsibly in all relationships. It's about becoming aware of and learning how to manage our sexual/creative energy in our bodies and in our lives. This workshop offers a fuller experience of some of the key aspects of tantra-yoga. You'll learn exercises that can be practiced alone or with a partner, and practical techniques that can be incorporated into intimate relationships. We'll introduce basic exercises to release physical and emotional tension, and to build, sustain and direct energy in the body. We'll discuss similarities and differences in men's and women's experience of intimacy, and how pleasure can be a sacred experience that can open to our true potential. This naturally helps us be more authentic with ourselves and our partners - both in and out of the bedroom. There'll also be time to cover any questions or topics of interest among the group. We'll be working on the floor, so please bring whatever you need to be comfortable on a carpetted surface. Individuals of all genders and orientations are welcome, with or without partners. For more information: www.zensations.ca $25 per person 3 hours |
| March 26, 2006 @ 6:30pm For couples | Sensual Massage for Couples |
| This workshop will teach the basics of sensual massage to enhance each partner's experience of touch, each other, and sensuality within their relationship. Participants will learn fundamental principles on how to give and receive an oil-based massage. Techniques to give a full-body massage will be demonstrated, and participants will have the opportunity to practice on one another's backs. Oils and creams will be provided, but participants must bring two sheets, towels, comfortable clothing and whatever they need to be comfortable working on the floor. This workshop is for couples of all genders and orientations. With Sonia Osorio & David Altmann, www.zensations.ca. $50/couple 3 hours |

Made in Secret: the Story of the East Van Porn Collective
October 14, 8:00pm
One night only! Made in Secret will be showing at the downtown branch of the Ottawa Public Library (Metcalfe St.) on October 14th at 8pm.
Is is real? Is it fiction? The only thing we know for sure is that this is a very smart and funny movie about sex, porn, friends, and doing it yourself. Made in Secret takes on some weighty topics (like sexual representation and consensus decision-making) with wit and subtlety, and provides a challenging vision of pornography as a matter of empowering and personal experience rather than soulless corporate titilation. This is excellent, wry, independent—and Canadian—filmmaking that shouldn't be missed by anyone with an interest in sexual politics, sexual representations, or the revolutionary possibilites of indy media.
Winner of the Ambiguity Award at the San Francisco independent Film Festival, Made in Secret is an engaging, inspiring and perplexing labour of love. Described as a "veritable Debbie Does Art School" and "a heroic act of idealism," Made in Secret is one of those films that you will likely never see in Ottawa again. Come on out and meet some of the collective, take in the film, and find out who these people are! And check out their website while you're at it: www.eastvanporncollective.org
Tickets are $5, and are available at Venus Envy. If there are any left over, they'll also be sold at the door.

Boxing Week Sale
Apparently xmas is right around the corner—at least that what all our suppliers are saying. So, with that in mind we're planning early for our annual boxing week sale. All our toys (vibes, dils, butt toys, cock rings, and ben wa balls) will be on sale the week after xmas. The sale starts on December 27th with 10% off, December 28th with 20% off, and December 29th with 30% off. The idea here is that only what's actually in stock is on sale and we want to get rid of stock before inventory day, so come on our early for the best selection!Artists
September and October
Marida Waters: Figure studies
Paintings of sensuous bodies in various degrees of abstraction. 25% of the sales from this showing are being donated to the Women's Voices Festival.
November and December
Maureen McGreavy: Hourglass Figures
Inspired by the notion that if from youth girls were socialized to the penis as something gentle, delicate and pretty, as opposed to bold, hard and penetrating, there would be a world of difference in relations between our sexes. The sculpted, corseted penis transforms the phallus into the female figure, toying with the notion of just who the corset is for. These hand-crafted figures, averaging six inches in height, attempt to demystify the penis and provide for all a pretty little penis to cherish and adore.
Maureen McGreavy is an artist and poet native to Ottawa; this is her first solo exhibit. She participated in a women's group exhibit at Artscourt in 1996, has done work on womens' issues for the National Union, mural commissions, and has sold works on various themes and mediums to private collectors. Incapable of being chained to a desk, she has spent the last decade working as a bicycle courier here in our nation's capital.

Book review
Wild Side Sex: The Book of Kink: Educational, Sensual, and Entertaining Essays. By Midori. (Daedalus, 2005)
Reviewed by Megan Butcher
Reviewer as Content Submissive:
The essays in this book are smart, witty, fun and insightful. Midori has two and a half decades as an out kinkster under her belt, the brains to process them intelligently, and the balls to write about them truthfully. She's obviously put hours of thought into the whys and wherefores of her sexual proclivities, and is able to distill those hours into concise personal truths about kink, its accouterments and its communities. I was entertained and turned on. This book refreshed my interest in all things kinky and gave my libido a good goosing.
The Q&A section (Part 4) is spot on, although not groundbreaking. The essays that I think shine are those in which Midori tries to tease apart the threads of why kinksters do what it is they do. Her essays on fetish, femme and dominance (Part 3) are particularly interesting and insightful. And the practical information is well done; the sections on pussy play and chastity (Part 2) shed new light on old topics for me—and an instrucion manual that gets you hot at the same time is ideal.
Most fans of Midori will have read these essays through the years as they were originally published, but will most likely enjoy having them easily accessible in one place. Those new to kink, or Midori, would be wise to pick this up as an entertaining and informative starting place. Highly recommended.
Reviewer as Grammar Dominant:
The frequent spelling and grammar mistakes are unacceptable, as are the occasional strings of awkward or overwrought languange, overdone metaphors (no more peaches, please!) and poor word choices. Running spell check does not constitute an editing job. "Complement" and "compliment" are two totally different words; "penultimate" does not mean "wow, that's way more than ultimate." I can only assume that Linda Santiman, listed as editor, read the essays with only cursory care and did not bother to scan the galleys. Shame on Daedalus Publishing for not putting the effort and money into fixing simple mistakes in an otherwise interesting and professional book.
