VE Bursary Fund News

Started in 2006, the Venus Envy Bursary Fund awards two people in the Ottawa area each a $1000 bursary. The bursary is awarded based primarily on need but also community involvement and other criteria. Starting in 2008, the bursary will be open to all women and trans people studying in Ottawa at any level of education.

You can find an application for September 2008 at:
www.venusenvy.ca/bursary

We raise funds in lot of ways. We throw parties and run the concession stand at Divergence Movie nights. We sell zines, pussy pops, and Venus Envy t-shirts at the store. We also donate 5% of in-store sales on the first Monday of each month. Or, you can mail us a cheque payable to the Venus Envy Bursary Fund...thanks!

Any questions about the bursary fund can be forwarded to ottawa@venusenvy.ca

Just Say No to Paper or Plastic!

The Bring a Bag and Save campaign was a huge success! Most of you chose not to take a bag over the past few months, cutting back our bag usage by about 80%. For the rest of 2008, we'll donate 5 cents to the Venus Envy Bursary Fund every time you just say no to a bag!

Book Review

He's Just Not Up For It Anymore: Why Men Stop Having Sex, and What You Can Do About It
by Bob Berkowitz and Susan Yager-Berkowitz. HarperCollins, 2007.

Reviewed by Megan Butcher

Summary:

This is a good book on a topic for which there is little information. It's well-structured, generally well-written, and even-handed. In most chapters, emphasis is placed on developing communication skills. The focus is fairly narrow, so unless you fit their very specific audience, you may have to do work quite hard to pick out the useful bits.

Top Love Taps

Every Friday, sex educator and author Patrick Califia answers a question from our customers on the Venus Envy website as the Venus Envy Advisor. This is a very popular feature of our site, but we thought it would be fun to bring you the 'best of' every newsletter. The letter below was our favorite from the past couple of months—enjoy!

Dear Patrick,

My lover is HIV-positive. (We are a straight couple.) I haven't told a lot of people because he prefers to keep his status private. So far, he is in pretty good health, but there are times when I wish I could talk about how it makes me feel to know that he has an illness that might kill him. But I know that my family would urge me to leave him. They would also suspect him of being gay. My friends are not that backward, but they wouldn't understand how I could fall in love with somebody who is positive. And after what happened this weekend, they will want to kill him....

Ladyfest Ottawa, in collaboration with punkottawa.com, presents a craft sale like no other. Featuring the hip, unique work of local and national artists and crafters, Not Your Grandma's Craft Sale takes place Saturday, May 10th, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Jack Purcell Community Center.

More than 6 years since they're inception, Ladyfest Ottawa craft sales have become one of the most anticipated events of the year for Ottawa's growing DIY movement. Attracting more and more crafters of national repute, with exciting new crafters showcasing clothes, jewellery, paper goods, house wares and so much more.

Not Your Grandma's Craft Sale is an edgy, DIY twist on the traditional craft bazaar. From "cute but evil" accessories to recycled leather cuffs, belts and wallet, hand-painted shoes and purses to log-shaped pillows and retro wood-grain clocks, this craft sale is a great source for one-of-a-kind gifts.

Ladyfest Ottawa and punkottawa.com continue their tradition of supporting DIY talent in Ottawa, partnering on music events and craft sales that fit the both their mandates.

Ladyfest Ottawa is part of a tradition of grassroots-organized festivals showcasing the talents of female artists. Now in its fifth year, Ladyfest Ottawa strives to build relationships and collaborations with local artists and businesses, in order to provide women with a venue for artistic expression that is open to everyone. More info on Ladyfest Ottawa and the craft sale can be found at www.ladyfestottawa.com.

Also since 2001, punkottawa.com has provided resources and a virtual gathering place for the local underground/DIY community, not only catering to music, but also activism and social change.

Art

May and June, 2008: Rachel Laratta

On view at Venus Envy until June 30, a selection of work from the studio of artist Rachel Laratta.

In her paintings, the artist looks at the way bodies in motion record direction and energy, visually and subliminally. In movement, we find balance, identity, perception, and time.

Rachel Laratta is a visual artist currently based in Ottawa Ontario. Originally from Toronto, she later relocated to Ottawa where she acquired her bachelor degree in Law and Philosophy from Carleton University. During her education, Rachel has taken special interest in the study of Ethics and Metaphysics. The artist draws from these subjects in the theme of her work. She is interested in the philosophy of traditional Chinese painting, which integrates with her creative process. Rachel has recently performed a live painting at the National gallery of Canada and hopes to continue facilitating public dialogue about identity and perception.

For further information about the artist and her work you may visit:
www.rachellaratta.com

September and October, 2008: Lesley Elora

Artist's statement: Looking at our urban environment as one that is not material and permanent but one that is fluid and filled with change inhibiting organic development, I wish to create accessible visual art by breaking down modern architectural and structural design into its most basic shapes. Unifying chaotic urban landscapes with an impressionist understanding I work primarily in acrylic to inspire meaning through the movement of colour.
