Pride Sale at Venus Envy

Agitate! presents a night of performances and discussion. We'll begin the night with an impressive line up of performers and finish with an engaging panel of writers and poets, showcasing artists of colour and indigenous artists in celebration of Pride!

Often writers of marginalized identities face challenges in representing and publishing their own points of view coupled with the threat of their voices being tokenized and co-opted in the process. Featuring both emerging and established writers from Ottawa and elsewhere, we will be discussing issues of representation, intersectionality and how identity and experience are expressed in their craft.

Confirmed so far are Rob Friday and Kalyani Pandya from Ottawa, Nalo Hopkinson from Toronto, and Trish Salah from Montreal.

This event will also be a fundraising effort for the Migrant Trade Union (MTU) in South Korea. MTU is a union of documented and undocumented migrant workers in South Korea, the only union of its kind in the world today. The MTU has joined in the struggle of GLBT people in South Korea, including defending the needs of its own GLBT members. Agitate feels it is important to connect our work with the struggle of other racialized people in the world, especially as the rights of migrant and undocumented workers in Canada continue to be largely ignored.

Vancouver filmmaker Gwen Haworth documents her male-to-female gender transition partially through the voices of her anxious but loving family, best friend, and wife. Finding self-empowerment through self-representation, Haworth's feature debut is a comic, heartbreaking, and uplifting autobiography that breaks away from marginalized depictions of transsexuals that populate mainstream media by focusing on a family whose bonds unexpectedly strengthen as they re-examine their preconceptions of gender and sexuality.

Venus Envy presents Reading OUT Loud, a celebration of GLBT literature. Join host Megan Butcher and other local famous and infamous queers as they read some of their favorite passages at the fourth annual Reading Out Loud.

Readers this year include activist Nikoo Boroumand, HIV/AIDS prevention outreach worker, Corey Wong, spoken word artist Luna Allison, radio personality Michael Bardwaj, and wordslinger-for-hire Faye "Festrell" Estrella.

The Ottawa Dyke March is an annual grassroots initiative organized by a small group of women who are committed to providing a welcoming and fun space for queer women, their families, friends and allies. This annual event is an opportunity for women to participate in a grassroots initiative that celebrates lesbian, bisexual, queer and trans women. Our message is explicit: ”We stand up for women's rights, we oppose racism and discrimination in any form, and we encourage women to stand up for their rights.”

Our theme for 2009 is "Public Display of Affection".

Join us on August 29 at 1:00 pm at the Human Rights monument on Elgin Street and help make it happen!

An evening of dueling solo shows! Lynnee and Silas of notorious dyke punk band Tribe8 are on tour again, ten years later, this time minus chicks and guitars. Both writers, directors, and musicians, Silas is a real musician/director and Lynnee is a poser. Silas makes 50-Cent videos and Lynnee is an improv comic. Silas is poignant and handsome, and Lynnee is funny and ugly. Always disarming, alarming, and keeping you on your rocker boot toes, both trace queer history, examining its impact on their lives as transmen today, with interdisciplinary comedy and theater.
